I've been speaking with Jon from the Shadyside Inn, and he has done something that no other group in Pittsburgh has been able to do -- singlehandedly setup a WiFi network in Shadyside, which is also the first ever memorial wireless network. Most of the other implimentations that were attempted in the area have relied upon point-to-point links (Grok), expensive third-party hardware (Hobnob), community support (pghwireless), or a payment stream (Downtown WiFi). In this case, Jon was able to setup his network using mesh-networking Meraki equipment, without a high cost, and without the technical troubles generally associated with deploying wireless networks. As it stands, he's been able to unwire Walnut Street at a fraction of the cost of just about any other wireless network -- all by himself. Jon also has plans to do several other neighborhoods in the area. Stay tuned as we report the rollouts.
